A Visit from Grandma and Grandpa

I just can't say enough how much we all love having visitors. It just doesn't happen nearly enough while we are across the continent from so many of our family. Trav's parents just left a week ago from a 12 day stay with us, and it was way too short! We loved having them here, and it is so good for the kids, too. I love moments like this when Micah climbs up to Grandpa and wants to snuggle and play with him.And how in the world did Grandpa convince Ammon to help bag leaves in the backyard. I would have had to threaten and bribe and use every trick in the book, but here I look out the window and Ammon was working really hard to help for a good 30 minutes...

We wasted the beautiful weather waiting for Trav to have a few days off, but those days off happened to coincide with tropical storm Ida combined with a Noreaster.....oh well, we did get to go and watch lots of jets taking off and landing the day before the storms started (jets flown by my very own husband), and that was very fun. I am pretty sure they would stay there and watch that stuff all day long every day if they could.

And we did get to show them a couple of cool places, like the moat that goes around Ft Monroe and the casemate museum there. And we did go to Jamestown...the moat is behind us.

Amazing people

All around me every day I see amazing people who are talented and organized and finding so many things to be amazing at. I have always had this quiet inner desire to be amazing at something--anything, and I've always been a bit mediocre. This isn't to complain, or to sound ungrateful for the gifts and healthy and strength and blessings that God has given me. In fact, I love to see the talents in others--people I am around every day inspire and motivate me to be a better person. People have talents in music and dancing and sports and creating, but I admire so many other talents that I notice in people. Fore example, talents in being organized and learning to be a better cook, and better frugal person, a funner mom, great talents in expressing their deepest thoughts and feelings. As a mom, there are so many things I want to be better at, and so many things I want to learn and wish I could improve all at once. I want to figure out how to teach my kids how to work hard and enjoy working together as a family. Chore charts--I stink at that so far....Anyway, In church a couple of weeks ago, Travis was giving the lesson about the Life of Christ. He started out by asking what a hero was, and what makes them a hero. I have so many heroes in my life and I cross paths with them daily. My home teachers, Brother Russell and his grandson Weston, who did so many things to help us while Travis was gone, and who even thought of little things like bringing a basketball to my boys and making sure it was a bright blue color so it wouldn't get lost as easily. Or my friend who has a new baby boy with a heart defect and she shows such faith and cheerfulness and gratitude for any time she is allowed to have this little boy in her family for however long God allows it. Or my many friends who continually offer to watch my boys, who truly care for them and and for me and love them and see their good qualities. My neighbor who mowed our lawn ever single week and made me feel okay about it because he sincerely convinced me I would being doing HIM a favor. My husband who is such a good person and a good dad does little things for me daily that make a big difference, and who makes me feel of worth. My heroes are also the people that I see who see another's need so easily and are so quick to serve. They make me want to be more like them. People with the God given ability to love those around them. I was walking through the store the other day and started just looking at all of these people that I didn't even know, and thinking of how amazing it is that God knows each and every one of those people and loves them with a strength I don't even fathom. Anyway random thoughts on a Sunday afternoon.....

Tantrums

I am sure if I had an ear infection in both ears I would throw myself on the floor and cry and kick my feet several several times a day, too. That must be it, because my angel Micah would never do such a thing or suddenly turn into a big grouchy head just because, right?....He's approaching the stage where I am starting to tell myself more often "It's a good thing he's so darn cute!"....So for now I am trying to turn away and ignore him when he falls to the floor and trying to think if I have been spoiling him in some fashion that I need to mend now....it's possible--it gets a little harder not to spoil and baby your baby when you know he could be your last and you know how fast he's going to grow...

Festive

Here are a couple of my attempts to load the kids up on fun healthy foods before trick-or-treating last night. These were idea I got off of the internet and copied, I think from familyfun.com. That's the hardest thing about sweet things for me, you can always make such cute and fun and festive things with candy and frosting...not always to easy with the healthy food. Anyway, this is part of our dinner that helped us feel better about eating candy later... Maybe I should just relax and not flip out about the beginning of the eight month candy binge. I don't remember my parents every throwing fits and becoming crazy candy policemen. We brought home as much as we could gather and ate what we wanted of it when we wanted to. I don't feel like it was a horrible thing, and yet I don't like it. Maybe part of it is that I am trying so hard to be healthy myself, and when the candy is there--I want it. Not only do I want it, but I EAT it, and it doesn't make me feel good. So the greatest solution would be for me to gain some self discipline, huh....
Regardless, these were fun and cute and the kids loved them and ate it all up, plus the leftover veggies that didn't fit into the skeleton.

Halloween

Friday night festivities--pumpkin carving...

It's funny all the comments we got from amazed trick-or-treaters about these pumpkins. We were the professional pumpkin carving family. But these cheating pumpkin carving kits have been around for ages--they should all know it took no creativity or talent on our part. I do love these kits and the cool things you can do with pumpkins, though. I know I should stick the the traditional and let each kids draw their own cool face design, and we would have let them if they wanted, but these are what they wanted. Really.
My mad scientiest. He couldn't have chosen a costume to suit him better...

Kaden robot. He and Noah decorated and designed this box all pretty much on their own. That makes for a fun and easy costume!

Ammon
Just trying the gorilla on Micah, but the fact is, I always fall back on the lion costume at this age. Noah wore it, Kaden wore it, Ammon wore it, and while that may seem unoriginal (it is!)--it's become tradition and they have all look so darn cute in it. Just wait...
Seee?

I remember other kids not tolerating the hood being up very well, we just had to put it up for a quick picture. But this kid seemed to love it!

Happy Halloween! We just went around the block here in our neighborhood--it was so nice because here in York County there is a time set--6 to 8 pm. And most people come out on their driveways and make it fun and easy and safe. We made it around the block and then the kids each picked out the 10 pieces they wanted to keep and put the rest in our bucket to give to other trick-or-treaters. Every year is a struggle to decide what we want to do as far as Halloween candy goes. Our dentist actually buys Halloween candy from kids, so I thought of doing that, too, but they were excited to go back out and empty their buckets in Daddy's bowl, so that's what we did....Ammon has talked about nothing but candy in the past few days, though. It turns him into a monster! I guess that's fitting for Halloween, but it drives me a little nuts...

The end of soccer season

Yesterday morning was Kaden's last soccer game. Noah's baseball also ended last week. This has been our funnest sports season by far. When you see the kids catching on to the actual game and doing well. It's been fun to watch and cheer them on. Sports are so great for them, and yet it seems like a nice idea to take a break for a couple of months so that they can come home from school and just PLAY more often. But maybe my timing is all off--it's approaching winter and we will need places to go and a couple of thing to do at least and not get cagey.....speaking of cold, yesterday----Halloween, reached past 80 degrees. The warmest Halloween we have ever had, even being in Florida last year. Practically hot, in fact. Kaden has been such a good little soccer player.
From last soccer season, it's been a huge difference. He has just been much more focused and been a great hustler. Challenges we had to address in the beginning: He cried the first practice because a team mate had scored more goals than he had. He kept track very closely. After just a talk or two, I noticed while he does get very excited and the testosterone flows freely, he also cheers his team mates. That's what he's doing in the picture above. He actually watches and cheers, which is a step from last season...

Kaden with his coach, George Santoni. We sure appreciate good coaches who put so much time and effort into teaching the kids how much fun playing sports should be.

Park fun

This is the park that the boys play at lately in the 30 minutes that Noah has his piano lesson. Micah looks WAY too much like a little boy all of the sudden and not so much a baby anymore...

Kaden and Ammon spent the whole time putting piles of leaves (fish) in front of their swings and pretending to fish.

Love this smile...
